Test Overview

What is the PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) Blood Test?

Our PCOS Blood Test measures key hormones and health markers to help identify signs of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and assess your overall hormonal balance.

Who is this test for?

This test is ideal if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Acne or changes in skin condition
  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Difficulty conceiving

It’s also suitable if you want to better understand your hormone health or investigate potential causes of these symptoms.

About This Test

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how the ovaries function and can lead to hormonal imbalance.

This test assesses a range of markers linked to:

  • Hormonal balance and androgen levels
  • Thyroid function
  • Cardiovascular risk factors (cholesterol levels)

By analysing these areas together, the test helps identify whether your symptoms may be linked to PCOS or another underlying condition.

What’s Included in This Test

This test measures 12 biomarkers across 3 categories:

  • Thyroid (2 biomarkers)
    • Free T4 (Thyroxine)
    • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Hormones (4 biomarkers)
    • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
    • Luteinising Hormone (LH)
    • Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)
    • Testosterone
  • Cholesterol (6 biomarkers)
    • HDL (High Density Lipoprotein)
    • LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein)
    • Non-HDL Cholesterol
    • Total Cholesterol
    • Total Cholesterol : HDL Ratio
    • Triglycerides

Together, these markers provide a well-rounded overview of your hormone health and associated risk factors.

Requirements & Preparation
  • You must be 18 years or over to take this test
  • Fasting is required for 8–12 hours before your test
  • Take your sample in the morning
  • Ideally take the test between days 2–5 of your menstrual cycle
(If you are not having periods, the test can be taken at any time)
  • Avoid biotin supplements for 48 hours before testing (unless advised by your doctor)
  • Hormonal contraception or HRT may affect results — speak to your GP if unsure

What biomarkers do we test?

Cholesterol 6 biomarkers
  • HDL: HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • LDL: LDL can lead to plaque build-up in arteries, increasing risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Triglycerides: Triglycerides are fats in the blood that can increase cardiovascular risk if elevated.
  • Total Cholesterol: Measures total cholesterol in the blood.
  • Cholesterol Ratio: Ratio used to assess cardiovascular risk.
  • Non-HDL Cholesterol: Measures all harmful cholesterol combined.
Hormones 4 biomarkers
  • SHBG: Controls how much testosterone is available in the body.
  • FSH: Controls reproductive function in men and women.
  • LH: Regulates reproductive hormone production.
  • Testosterone: Supports energy, muscle mass, libido and overall wellbeing.
Thyroid 2 biomarkers
  • TSH: Regulates thyroid hormone production.
  • Free T4: Helps regulate metabolism and energy.

More Information

PCOS can affect multiple areas of health, including fertility, metabolism, and hormone balance.

Hormonal imbalances — particularly increased androgen (male hormone) levels — may contribute to many of the common symptoms associated with PCOS.

This test helps:

  • Identify hormonal patterns linked to PCOS
  • Assess related health risks such as cholesterol imbalance
  • Provide clarity on potential next steps

While blood testing can provide strong indicators, diagnosis of PCOS is usually based on a combination of symptoms, blood results, and clinical assessment.
