Test Overview
What is the Pregnancy HCG Blood Test?
Our Pregnancy HCG Blood Test measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in your blood to help confirm pregnancy and monitor early pregnancy development.
This test is ideal if you:
- Think you may be pregnant and want early confirmation
- Have had IVF or fertility treatment
- Want to monitor an early pregnancy
- Have had a positive pregnancy test and want reassurance
It’s also suitable if you want a more sensitive and accurate test than a standard urine pregnancy test.
HCG is a hormone produced shortly after a fertilised egg implants in the uterus. Levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, making it a reliable marker for detecting and monitoring pregnancy.
Unlike urine tests, a blood test:
- Can detect pregnancy earlier
- Measures the exact level of hCG
- Can help monitor how a pregnancy is progressing
This makes it particularly useful in early pregnancy or when additional reassurance is needed.
This test measures 1 key biomarker across 1 category:
- Hormones (1 biomarker)
- Beta HCG
- You must be 18 years or over to take this test
- No fasting is required

What biomarkers do we test?
- Beta hCG: Confirms and monitors early pregnancy.
More Information
HCG levels can typically be detected in the blood around 10 days after a missed period, and will usually continue to rise in early pregnancy.
This test may be used to:
- Confirm pregnancy
- Monitor early pregnancy development
- Provide reassurance following fertility treatment
In some cases, repeat testing may be recommended to assess how hCG levels are changing over time.
Results are typically available within 1–3 working days from when your sample reaches the laboratory.
