What is the Prostate (PSA) Blood Test?
Our Prostate (PSA) Blood Test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood to help assess prostate health and identify any potential concerns.
This test is ideal if you:
- Are aged 45 or over
- Have a family history of prostate cancer
- Want to monitor your prostate health
- Have previously been diagnosed with a prostate condition
- Are looking for reassurance about your health
It’s also suitable as a proactive health check, particularly if you have risk factors.
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. It is normal to have small amounts of PSA in your blood, and levels can increase naturally with age.
This test measures your PSA level to help identify whether there may be changes in your prostate.
It’s important to understand:
- Elevated PSA levels do not automatically mean cancer
- Levels can also rise due to:
- Prostate enlargement
- Infection (prostatitis)
- Recent physical activity or stimulation
This test provides an important first step in assessing prostate health and determining whether further investigation may be needed.

- Prostate (1 biomarker)
- Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
- You must be 18 years or over to take this test
- Avoid strenuous exercise and ejaculation for 48 hours before your test
- Avoid biotin supplements for 48 hours before testing (unless advised by your doctor)
These factors can temporarily increase PSA levels and affect your results.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, with risk increasing with age and family history.
Monitoring PSA levels can help:
- Identify potential prostate issues early
- Track changes over time
- Support decisions around further testing if required
If your PSA level is elevated, your GP may recommend:
- Repeat testing (often after 6–8 weeks)
- Further investigations if needed
Results are typically available within 3–5 working days from when your sample reaches the laboratory.

You are under the age of 18 as we have a strict over 18 policy (We may need to ask for proof of age and ask to see ID prior to your appointment)
Please be aware:
Some people may feel dizzy and/or faint during and after their blood draw. If this has happened to you in the past, please tell the person carrying out the test so they are aware. The maximum attempts that are permitted with your consent will be two blood draw attempts. It is common to have a small amount of bruising after the procedure. This is normal and should resolve after a few days. However, if the area becomes red or swollen, please seek medical advice. Its fine to bring someone with you for support.
